Summer Fun In The Pool!

I think we made the best purchase ever this summer!  We bought an above ground pool for the backyard.  The kids swam almost every afternoon!  They all became so comfortable in the water by the end of summer.  We had friends over to swim.  We had cousins over to swim.  Grace and Sophia went out in the evenings and swam together.  Josh and I swam with the kids.  It was just so much fun!  Here are some pictures of friends and family enjoying the pool:

I know I have more pictures but they must be on my phone!  So I'll post more later.

Arthur - Eight Months

Ah my sweet little Arthur.  Looking back now I realize I could have been a good mom and put a blanket down for him and he probably would have been much happier for his pictures!  At least Dolly could cheer him up momentarily!  Arthur just loves Dolly and Dolly, as always, is so good with babies.  They can pull his hair or climb on him and pinch him and she doesn't mind a bit.  Best.Dog.Ever.

At eight months Arthur has four teeth.  He was sleeping through the night, but now gets up at least once for a bottle.  He is crawling, mostly on all fours.  It's so funny to watch him and see how fast he can move when he really wants something.  Sophia is his favorite right now and often times he will choose her over me!  He hates baby food but will eat a little bit of it.  He gags on most other things, like crackers.  He is just a little love bug!!

Levi - Preschool

Oh this boy melts my heart every single day!  He also drives me up a wall with his stubbornness every single day!  He loves to play with his cars and trucks, and build with blocks or legos.

Levi's preschool is pretty basic.  Some days we get to it and some days we don't.  Right now we are just learning the letters and their sounds.  I am using the preschool program I purchased a couple years ago from Confessions of a Homeschooler.  This gives us plenty of hands on activities for each letter.  I just put them in his school drawers and he picks what he would like to do.  I'm also using Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool to supplement.  I just go to Level One and find the letter we are working on and then we use the computer links.  He really enjoys the alphabet and letter videos.

It is so very different homeschooling a boy.  He refuses to color most days.  But give him paper and he will cut with a scissor all day!  He insists on doing school when the girls do.  I think he doesn't like to be left out.  I can't even distract him with a learning video or the IPad!  I have learned that it is best to get him going on something first before I even try to work with the girls.  I am thankful though that he does take an interest in learning.  After two weeks of working on the letter A I thought it was time to give up when he all of the sudden put it together and figured out the A sound.  After that he learned the E really quickly.  What a relief!

Lydia - Grade One

Lydia is in first grade this year.  She mostly likes to be inside playing with her doll house toys.  She builds these great big houses for her dolls to live in.

Here is a listing of her curriculum this year:

Language Arts:

Spelling Workout A
Explode The Code
A Reason For Handwriting A
Writing Strands Level 1
Bob Books

Math:

Math Mammoth
Fred - Apples

History:

A Child's History of The World

Science:

Apologia Astronomy

Lydia also uses our list of electives if she finishes school early or is waiting for help.  Having this list of electives has been a real lifesaver for me.  I am so thankful for other homeschool moms who share their wisdom!  Lydia has a love/hate relationship with school.  It mostly depends on her mood and if she has had enough sleep!  I had to revamp her math and language arts about three weeks in, too.  But we are working through things so much easier now.

Allison - Second Grade

Allison is in the second grade this year.  She loves to play outside.  Hiking our hills is usually where you will find her this fall.

Here is a listing of her curriculum this year:

Language Arts:

Spelling Workout B
Easy Grammar Grade Two
Explode the Code
Writing Strands Level One
A Reason For Handwriting
Bob Books

Math:

Math Mammoth
Fred Book One

History:

A Child's History of The World

Science:

Apologia Astronomy

Allison also uses the list of electives I typed up to keep her busy if she finishes school early or if she is waiting for help.  It has taken some major adjustments this year to get our curriculum where we are both pretty happy with it.  We both ended up not liking my first picks for language arts and math.  So a few weeks in to the school year we pretty much started over!  But it is going much better now.  I feel like she is learning and not struggling so much.

I also have a very long list of electives that she can choose from if she finishes her school early or if she is waiting on me for help.  So far the school year is going well and she is learning a lot.  She is a bit behind in math but she is on track to catch up quickly.  She is loving the Teaching Textbooks program.  All in all I am pretty happy with my picks for her this year!
